“Stephanie is so much fun. She oozes a playful and contagious creative energy. In this class, your child will be engaged and encouraged, and helped “just enough”. My daughter is always curious to hear what fun idea Mrs Stephanie has next. Each class focuses on a new basic technique and creative prompt, but the results will beautifully vary from child to child. Break out of step-by-step “copy me exactly” art classes and experience the joy of well-kindled creative freedom.”

WHAT IS THIS CLASS?
This class invites young artists to dive into materials-based exploration. We rotate through mediums like watercolor, drawing, oil pastels, paper collage, sculpture, and air-dry clay, spending 4–8 weeks on each. Every class I’ll demonstrate different techniques and offer prompts, but I cannot tell you exactly what project your child will end up with, since what students create is entirely up to their own imaginations!
For example: in a sculpture class, different students might turn a sculptural prompt into a dragons, a hat, or something architectural! The focus is on freedom, curiosity, and creative discovery.
And if that means that instead of making a collage, your 6-year-old is discovering how satisfying it can feel to tear a piece of paper into tiny little pieces, then I'm fine with that (hopefully they'll then use them in artwork some how, but if not, that's ok too) 😄 It’s all part of the creative process!
WHAT HAPPENS IN CLASS?
Here’s what a typical session might include:
5–15 minutes: discussion and demonstration (sometimes referencing related artworks)
20–25 minutes: open work time, where kids apply techniques or follow their own ideas
5–10 minutes: wrap-up and optional sharing* (never forced!)
*I understand some kids are more shy than others! I strive to create an environment where learners feel brave/comfortable enough to share when they feel ready.
Throughout, I emphasize exploration over perfection. Mistakes are a critical part of artistic learning!
WHAT ART SUPPLIES DO LEARNERS NEED?
The rough schedule is as follows, but is subject to change - things may shift depending on the class itself. Although I have a structure in mind, I remain open to the idea that student work or discussion in class may spark a whole new direction for exploration!
The materials change with each rotation, but here’s a general idea:
Watercolor rotation (Sept/Oct): watercolor pan set, watercolor paper, brushes, a few household items
Drawing rotation (Nov/Dec): pencils, black felt tip pen, crayons, colored pencils
Oil pastel rotation (Jan): oil pastels, white & black paper, a few household items
Paper rotation (Feb/Mar): construction paper, scissors, tape, glue stick
Sculpture rotation (Apr/May): pipe cleaners, craft sticks, air-dry clay
I’ll provide a detailed supply list in the classroom before each rotation.
