Adulting is HARD.

Why should kids have all the fun? (Just watch this one!)

What do you mean, you’re not creative?

Maybe you don’t feel that way - but you were born with a creative spark!

Maybe someone else stifled it with a mean comment - or maybe you simply didn’t have time to nurture it. When we don’t make space for creativity, we can feel disconnected from it.

"The most regretful people on earth are those who felt the call to creative work, who felt their own creative power restive and uprising, and gave to it neither power nor time."

— Mary Oliver, "Of Power and Time"

How would you like to connect with your inner child’s sense of play and imagination in a joyful, judgment-free space, where you can explore your creativity and rekindle the joy of playing with art materials the way little kids do?

The Uncreatives allows you to do just that - with live online classes, pre-recorded content, and an exclusive online membership community!

WHAT STUDENTS ARE SAYING

A friend suggested that I try your Imagination Breaks for adults. From the very first exercise I was hooked! Making us look at an everyday object or scene and instructing us to look beyond what it was to what it could be was not only fun, but translated into my outlook in my own artistic practice - that freedom to look at things from a completely different perspective and to have fun while doing it.
— Liz, imagination Break Participant

Hi, I’m Stephanie!

…and that picture of me teaching, with paper pea pods from class stuck in my hair, pretty much sums up the joy I find in sharing art with people!

Who am I, and why make stuff with me?

I was inspired to start this membership the first time I heard the parent one of my young students ask: “When are you doing these classes for US!???”

I realized she was right - connecting with creativity is far more effortless for kids. It’s time to give adults a chance to have that same kind of fun!

I find so much joy in my day-to-day - the different colors in a brick wall, finding faces in everything. When you devote time to art and creativity, you NOTICE more and interface differently with the world.

I don’t think this gift is exclusive to “artists” - I think we can all cultivate a more creative way of looking at the world, and I’d love to be your guide!

I’ve been working with kids and adults as a teaching artist and museum educator for more than 25 years in a variety of settings, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The New York Public LIbrary.

How is The Uncreatives different from other online art memberships?

Other memberships focus heavily on art mastery, with the end goal of frameable art. That can feel pretty intimidating when you're just getting back into the game.

In The Uncreatives, you'll learn real art techniques - but through the lens of curiosity and play, not mastery and perfection. I teach you art fundamentals the way I teach my younger students: experimenting with materials, exploring possibilities, and discovering what happens when you try something new.

There's no "right" way to create here. You learn the skills, then use them YOUR way. This is about creative freedom, not copying the teacher exactly.

Here's how one parent described my approach with their 7-year-old:

"Break out of step-by-step 'copy me exactly' art classes and experience the joy of well-kindled creative freedom."

If all kids were taught this way, they'd never lose touch with their creativity. Let's get that back for YOU.

Why Join and Take Time for Your Creativity?

Because we all need an antidote to adulting!

When's the last time you chose to do something just because it felt good? When you got so absorbed in an activity that you forgot about your to-do list, your worries, your responsibilities - even your phone?

🎨 Here’s a chance to do something for YOU. Not to prove anything to anyone. Not to become the next Picasso. Not to justify your "hobby" to others. To explore, experiment and play without the need to produce a perfect picture - the journey is the destination.

🎨 In The Uncreatives, you can:

  • Connect with your innate creativity. It feels good to remember it’s there - you were born with it!

  • Explore without pressure. No one's grading you, judging you, or expecting perfection - and you don’t have to “master” anything!

  • Unwind and destress. Art-making can feel fun, meditative, or both.

  • Give your mind a break from the ins-and-outs of daily life to let it play and wander. Taking a moment for yourself shifts your mindset for the rest of the day.

  • Think outside the box. Flex your imagination, and watch that innovative thinking spill over into work, parenting, and everyday problem-solving!

  • Connect with other adults who also crave creative expression. You’re not alone - so many others want a supportive space to explore. Be part of a community of adults making room for creativity!

🎨 You deserve creative time. Remember: there's no "right" way to be creative. Join us, and give yourself permission to play!

Common Questions

Q: I'm a total beginner - is this really for me?
A: YES! This is specifically designed for people who don’t feel connected to their creativity or feel like they "can't do art." No experience needed.

Q: Do I need to buy a lot of art supplies?
A: We’re going to stay simple! For imagination breaks, you’ll use basic stuff you probably already have: paper, pencils, tape, things to draw with, a glue stick. For the Back to Basics courses, I’ll recommend supplies but you won’t need to break the bank. For example, you can use a Crayola pan set for the watercolor class. If you want to splurge on expensive materials that’s your call, but I’m going to suggest starting simple.

Q: How much time do I need to commit?
A: As much or as little as you want! Pick and choose what fits your schedule - there's no pressure or attendance requirement. Go at your own pace. It’s supposed to be fun, not stressful 🙂 Come to every live, come to a live every two weeks, once a month, or just watch the pre-recorded classes - whatever works for you.

Q: What if I can't make the live sessions?
A: No worries! Back to Basics courses are pre-recorded and available in your on-demand library - the live sessions cover the same material if you prefer to work in community. Imagination Breaks are live-only experiences (like improv!), but they happen weekly so you'll have plenty of chances to join.

Q: What if I miss a lot and fall behind?
A: Here's what's different about The Uncreatives: since we're not all painting one specific picture together, you don't need to "catch up" the way you would in other classes. Yes, there's some progression as we explore techniques, but you can absolutely jump into any live session and participate - even if you haven't watched the previous videos and missed some classes. You'll still learn, experiment, and create. Want to catch up later? Great! Don't have time? Also great! Just show up when you can and play with us!

Q: I’m not sure if this is for me. Can I try it out?
A: Absolutely. I’m offering a 7-day money-back guarantee when you join. But I hope it is right for you 😁

Q: But what EXACTLY will we be making?
A: This is one of my favorite questions! When I get new kids in my classes who are used to copy-me-exactly classes, they often start by saying “What are we making today?” And I say, “I don’t know!” and their mouths fall open….I then explain, I’ll be presenting an idea, but since we have creative freedom to interpret that, to take this technique in any direction, I can’t tell anyone what they’re going to make. In most class sessions I’ll introduce a technique to practice - eg, sgraffito with oil pastels. We’ll discuss different ideas for what we might do with that technique, I might have an inspiration photo for those who need a further nudge (I have a fish photo I use in that class as an example of a subject that works well for experimenting), but what you do on your page? That’s all you!

Q: What’s the point of doing something like this if I don’t know what I’m going to make? Are you guaranteeing I’ll become a better artist?
A: Great question. What does it mean to be a good artist? Can the experience of making art be valid if you’re not conventionally skilled and you can’t “prove it” by making a perfect frameable art piece? I would say, emphatically, YES! What you’re cultivating here is CREATIVITY - and the joy of allowing yourself to play without pressure often leads to, well, making stuff you like!
What we’re aiming for here is re-developing a connection with the joy of making. - which all kids have - making marks and creating things just because it feels good to do it. If you’re locked into a mindset of “if it doesn’t look great right away, then I’m a terrible artist,” it may feel challenging to relax into it at first. But that’s the whole point. Consider this, though: every piece of paper, everything you try, becomes a visual record of that experience. It reminds you - oh right, I felt so relaxed when I was experimenting with what kinds of lines I could make with my brushes. Might it look cool, too? Yes! But does it always have to?
Here’s the thing: you WILL learn tangible art skills - for example, different watercolor and oil pastel techniques - and practice them. But I’m simply opening the door for you - you have to walk through it.
(PS: you might want to look up “outsider artists” - self-taught artists who make things because they love it, who are discovered and appreciated. Look up Horace Pippin, who has work hanging in the Metropolitan Museum! And Grandma Moses didn’t start painting til her late 70s. You don’t have to be highly-trained to make something valuable.)

Q: Do I have to share my work?
A. Absolutely not! I aim to create a non-judgmental space where you feel comfortable sharing, but there’s no pressure. We are all on this journey together, and since the goal isn’t perfection, I hope you’ll start to feel at ease about your progress at your pace. But you will never be pressured to share with anyone.
