WHAT IS THIS CLASS ABOUT?
This class is all about learning to paint with liquid tempera (or similar paints like poster paint — just make sure they are not acrylic!). We’ll explore how to mix colors, create tints and shades, and care for our art materials. The goal is to build comfort and confidence so learners can keep painting on their own — no step-by-step copying, and lots of creative freedom!
Early weeks focus on color mixing and experimenting with a limited palette (black, white, red, blue, yellow — no extra colors needed!). Expect lots of playful, abstract art at first as we explore how color works.
Later on, we’ll use those skills to create expressive artworks — animals, landscapes, and more — with plenty of room for individual ideas.
Sample schedule (may shift based on class needs):
Week 1: Black paint only
Weeks 2–5: Mixing secondaries, tints, and shades
Weeks 6–10: Creative projects using learned techniques (cutting in, painting over drawings, adding oil pastel)
WHAT HAPPENS IN CLASS?
Initial demo of the day’s technique
25-30 minutes of creative work time
Optional sharing and discussion at the end (sharing is encouraged but never required)
I create a supportive space where learners feel comfortable sharing when they’re ready!
ART SUPPLIES NEEDED
A full supply list (with brand suggestions) will be posted in the classroom, but here’s what you’ll need:
Liquid tempera paints (not tempera cakes) — I’ll recommend specific brands
A few paintbrushes in different sizes
Oil pastels or crayons (for later weeks)
Cellulose sponge
Jar for water
Larger paper — ideally 12x18/A3 and slightly heavier-weight (suggestions will be posted)
PARENTAL NOTE ABOUT MESS:
Tempera paint can be very messy! I strongly recommend covering your workspace with newspaper or a plastic tablecloth, and using a smock (or an old shirt you don’t mind getting stained).
