I've been teaching art for 28 years, and can tell you that the biggest barrier to creativity is the voice in your head saying you're not good enough.
Adults tell me all the time: "I'm not creative." "I can't draw." "I used to love making art, but..."
There's a big contrast between how adults and kids approach creativity.
Since 2020, I've been teaching a kids' class called "Making Art from Mistakes and Imagination" - built around quick creative prompts I call Imagination Breaks. Most kids dive in fearlessly, experiment and play. They don't worry if they're "doing it right." Even the kids who come in anxious quickly discover that creativity isn't about being perfect - it's about letting go of expectation. When they do that - they blossom!
Watching that happen made me realize how much adults need to get back to that mindset!
This FREE 5-day challenge brings my playful, judgment-free approach to grown-ups who feel like they've lost touch with their creativity.
No skill required! No pressure. No perfection. Just permission to play.
Sign up for this free challenge, and receive one email every day for five days,
containing a short video (2-5 minutes) with an easy creative prompt - an Imagination Break -
to do at your leisure, using only simple supplies you already have!
Spend 5 minutes, 15 minutes, however many you want :)
The point is activating your imagination!
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING:
“A friend suggested that I try your Imagination Breaks for adults. From the very first exercise I was hooked! Making us look at an everyday object or scene and instructing us to look beyond what it was to what it could be was not only fun, but translated into my outlook in my own artistic practice - that freedom to look at things from a completely different perspective and to have fun while doing it.”
FAQs
How much does it cost?
Nothing!
Why should I do this?
A better question might be: why shouldn’t you?
These Imagination Breaks are a quick, easy way to add a little creativity to your day - at your own pace. Many people find it a relief to have an excuse to make something quick, easy, and often a little silly. Without any pressure to create something specific, you may find these activities meditative, fun, or a little of both!
What exactly will I make?
I’m not sure! :)
Each day, you'll get a short video with an Imagination Break prompt. But I won't tell you what you'll be making - there's no specific outcome.
Instead, I'll prompt you to start an image by doing something on your page - like tracing something, or making a scribble - and you'll use that as your launching point. Where will it go from there? That's up to you.
If you feel nervous about not knowing exactly what you'll end up with, try it anyway! Wonderful things can happen when we stop worrying about the end result.
What if I really do suck at art?
I can tell you that thinking you suck at art definitely sucks the joy out of trying creative endeavors! My goal is to help you get back in touch with the act of making - about remembering that there can be joy in the PROCESS. Can you have fun making something without knowing how it will come out? Is it possible that allowing yourself to be creative without needing it to be perfect might free you from that expectation and as a result, allow you to grow and develop more artistic skill? I say yes. Ultimately, that’s a deeper question.
How about, try it? See if the fact that you are not expected to create a specific, scripted thing makes it easier to enjoy the process of simply exploring your imagination!
Ok, I’m in. What supplies do I need?
paper (any kind!)
stuff to draw and/or color with (whatever you want - pencil, pen, colored pencils, etc!)
scissors
tape and/or glue stick
