“My 7-year-old LOVED this class. The teacher is clear and knowledgeable, and wonderful with the kids. I was very impressed that instead of being a “how to draw one specific thing” kind of class (as many art classes are), this class gave my daughter several tips and tricks that she has been applying in her art ever since. ”

WHAT IS THIS CLASS ABOUT?

This beginner-friendly class introduces learners to foundational watercolor techniques like blending, layering, and wet-on-wet painting, as well as creative special effects like using salt, tissue, plastic wrap, and crayon resist.

We’ll start by learning how to use watercolor materials correctly, even down to activating colors in a pan. Throughout the week, learners will gain tools and confidence to explore this beautiful medium independently.

There is no step-by-step copying — all student artwork will be their own! I offer daily themes, technique demos, and creative prompts, but I always encourage kids to follow their own inspiration.

This class is ideal for beginners, or those who’ve used watercolor but mostly “paint inside the lines” with solid color fills. We’ll break that mold!

WHAT HAPPENS IN CLASS?

  • Initial demo of the day’s technique

  • 30–35 minutes of creative work time

  • Optional sharing and discussion at the end (sharing is encouraged but never required)

I create a supportive space where learners feel comfortable sharing when they’re ready!

CLASS OUTLINE

  • Day 1: Watercolor basics

  • Day 2: Gradients and wet-on-wet

  • Day 3: Removing color

  • Day 4: Texture & resist

  • Day 5: Glazing, layering, and a mini nightscape project

ART SUPPLIES NEEDED

IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLIES:

Good materials matter.
You don’t need expensive tools — but you do need real watercolor paper and decent paint. Many special effects simply won’t work without them, and I don’t want any learner to feel discouraged because of their materials. I’ll post clear recommendations (with brand suggestions) to help guide your purchases.

  • Watercolor pan set – NOT tubes; a basic 8-color set like Crayola or Prang is perfect
(Avoid sets included in large art kits — they often lack pigment and won’t work well for this class)

  • Watercolor paper (140lb) – NOT mixed media paper or thin "watercolor & marker" pads
(Plan for 2–3 sheets per day)

  • Brushes – Not just the tiny brush from the paint set! A few larger, fuller brushes are needed

  • Water container – A small jar or cup, half-full

  • Paper towels or a folded washcloth

  • Crayons

  • Household extras for special effects:

    • Scotch tape

    • Facial tissues

    • Paper towels

    • Plastic wrap

    • Wax paper (optional)

CLASS POLICIES

  • Siblings must register separately

  • Refund if canceled 21+ days before start; after that, credit valid for 6 months

  • No refunds or make-ups for missed classes

  • Class recordings available for those who miss a session (if I’ve previously met the learner)

  • Cameras must be on at the start for verification; optional off during work time

  • Please ensure no adults appear on camera
