Online Art Camp: Tessellations - Pattern Magic! (4 consecutive days)
In this four-day camp-style class, up to 9 young artists (ages 8-12) will learn how to create amazing tessellations — the interlocking, repeated patterns found in the work of artists like M.C. Escher and in Islamic art. Through hands-on projects, they’ll design and decorate their own patterned pages, blending art and geometry in a playful, creative way!

“Both kids really enjoyed the class. It has a fun, puzzle-like aspect that probably appeals to a lot of kids, even those who don’t naturally gravitate toward art classes. ”

WHAT IS THIS CLASS?
We’ll break down the secrets behind tessellations in a way that’s accessible and fun for young artists. Over four days, I’ll guide students through the major types — translation, glide reflection, and rotation — with clear demonstrations and plenty of time for creative experimentation.
By the end, they’ll have a collection of their own unique tessellated designs!
WHAT HAPPENS IN CLASS?
Here’s what a typical session includes:
Slide show and discussion (longest on Day 1) to explore examples
Demonstration of that day’s technique
30–35 minutes of hands-on creation
Optional sharing time at the end (never forced)
Over the first three days, we’ll cover three basic tessellation types. On day 4, learners can either finished decorating their designs, or explore new variations!
WHAT ART SUPPLIES DO LEARNERS NEED?
Pre-cut 3"×3" cardstock squares (1-2 per session) - you can cut these from cardstock or anything slightly heavier-weight - index cards work well, or cereal boxes!
Paper on which tracing their patterns (8.5"×11"/A4 or larger)
Basic art supplies (a pencil, and anything they may wish to use to color: eg markers, colored pencils)
Optional: cardstock hexagons for advanced variations (template provided)
Scotch/cello-tape
