“This was one of my child’s favorite camps/classes taken this summer! The clay exploration in our house continued after each day, and still continues after camp is over with newfound techniques to explore with the clay. I loved how Stephanie encouraged them to use minimal tools at first and allowed the kids to inspire each other as they created during class time and didn’t focus on an end product, but the joy of learning how to use clay and working with it. My child can’t wait to take more classes from Stephanie!”
THE NITTY-GRITTY
FOR WHO: Ages 6-9 (number of students: minimum 3, maximum 9)

WHAT IS THIS CAMP?
Over our five days together, we’ll explore the many creative possibilities of air-dry clay! Students will learn hand-building techniques like pinching, coiling, and slab work, while becoming familiar with the texture and behavior of this versatile material.
Each day I’ll demonstrate a new technique — like how to build a coil pot — and students will then use that skill in their own way. They may not end up with a finished piece each session (and that’s okay!). Clay is flexible — it can be squished and re-shaped again and again, encouraging experimentation and play.
Every student’s work will look different. We won’t be making identical projects (no matching butterflies here!). Instead, learners will build skills that let them create in their own direction.
On the final day, they will be able to to decorate anything they made on day 1 or 2 - but pieces from later days won’t likely be dry enough. I will review decorating rules, and we’ll make new things!
WHAT HAPPENS IN CLASS?
A typical 45-minute class includes:
5–15 minutes discussion and demonstration
20–25 minutes work time
5–10 minutes sharing and reflection
Important note about sharing: I never force kids to share their work. I create an environment where learners feel safe and confident enough to share when they're ready.
ART SUPPLIES NEEDED
A full list will be posted in the classroom, but here’s what you’ll need:
White air-dry clay – Crayola is a reliable brand.
⚠️ Avoid any brand of small colorful multipacks labeled “air-dry clay” — those are not the same thing!Simple tools – Items like a plastic knife, fork, spoon, or chopstick work great
Cellulose sponge
Optional decorating materials for last day:
Colored pencils and/or crayons
Watercolor or acrylic paints (only bring acrylics if your child already has experience with them)
Mod Podge (matte or gloss) for sealing and finishing pieces
PARENTAL NOTE ABOUT MESS
Air-dry clay can be dusty and messy! Please protect your workspace with a table covering, and consider short sleeves and/or a smock for your learner.
