WHAT IS THIS CAMP?

In this five-day camp, students will explore animal drawing through a balance of technical skill and creative expression. Each week, we'll focus on a different animal using photos as inspiration.

While students will learn foundational drawing techniques, we won’t aim for photo-realism - instead, they’re encouraged to get as creative as they want: making a snout longer, changing fur color, or fun details to the animals or background (clothing, other animals, a different setting - the sky’s the limit!).

Mistakes are part of the process and are expected! Whether students want to focus on realistic practice or experiment with playful exercises, I support them in developing their own artistic voice and confidence.

At the end of the week, they’ll have a fun portfolio of different animals!

WHAT HAPPENS IN CLASS?

We’ll do:

  • A quick check-in or warm-up exercise to get started

  • Guided demonstrations and tips (with my hands shown on a document camera)

  • 30–35 minutes of focused drawing time, where students can work at their own pace

  • Sharing our work — students can show their progress if they wish, but sharing is never required!

Throughout, I offer encouragement and guidance, making sure each student feels supported whether they stick close to realism or explore more expressive, imaginative directions.

WHAT ART SUPPLIES DO LEARNERS NEED?

  • Paper: 9x12 or A4 drawing paper (ideally in a sketchbook to track progress)

  • Pencils: a basic #2 pencil works, but if possible, I recommend adding a 6B for richer shading (eg, Ebony pencils)

  • Eraser: it’s great to have a separate eraser, not just the one on a pencil

  • Materials to add color: eg colored pencils, markers, crayons, or other preferred media
