THE NITTY-GRITTY
For Who: the sweet spot is ages 7-12ish, but older learners & even adults are welcome! Younger learners may also attend, though instruction won’t specifically target younger age groups.
When: July 27-31, 4:00-4:50pm EST
Webinar format: webinars are great for privacy, because learners can’t turn on their cameras or audio. They can see and hear me, but I can’t see or hear them. However, it’s still very interactive - learners engage directly with me through a direct-to-teacher chat function, and I respond verbally in real time!
Why Animal-ISH?
Because "-ish" takes the pressure off! It feels so much easier to draw an animal when we're not worrying about it looking picture-perfect. Instead of struggling to capture every detail, we're thinking about how to capture an animal's hallmarks. For example: what makes a rabbit feel rabbit-ish? Long ears, fluffy tail. We'll give ourselves permission to let our drawings feel -ish, without needing them to be perfect: ostrich-ish, hedgehog-ish, cat-ish!
This is not a typical copy-me-exactly class.
A lot of art classes ask kids to follow along step-by-step, so everyone's artwork looks more or less the same.
But in Animal-ish Drawing Camp, I don't require students to drive down the exact same path as me.
I demonstrate techniques and talk through ideas as we look at animal photos, but encourage students to go off in their own direction at any moment and get as creative as they want. Follow along more closely, or go in a different direction - both are great.
Want to dress up your animals? Put them in a castle? Change their colors or ears or tails or something else entirely? Great!
Want to stick to the "script"? That's fine too.
Get ready for a week of fun and laughter! By the end of the week, participants will have a portfolio of fun animal drawings that are uniquely theirs.
How do the live classes work?
There's an additional layer of privacy for learners in a webinar vs a zoom call, because their cameras and microphones are off, and the chat function goes only to me.
Learners will be able to see and hear me (my face, drawing hand, and reference photos together), but I can't see or hear them.
However, unlike watching a YouTube tutorial, it's still highly interactive! I ask questions to gauge understanding and adapt as necessary. Learners can engage directly with me by typing into a Q&A, and I'll respond verbally in real time. They can also use emoji reactions.
And since learners can’t share their work on camera during class, I hope they’ll post it to the private Facebook community!

Monday: Birds
We kick things off loose and free - coloring first without outlining or overthinking. Birds come in every shape imaginable, which makes them a great starting point.Tuesday: Fish
Continuing a looser exploration, we'll pick up with fish - such a fun thing to draw because you can invent one and it could totally be real somewhere! We'll use real fish as inspiration, discuss ways to show fins, tails, scales, and see where our imaginations take us.Wednesday: Texture (Puli + Hedgehog)
Visual texture helps us understand how something might feel. Today we'll play with creating different textures in our drawings, focusing on two animals with very different textures.Thursday: Squirrel + Skunk
What do squirrels and skunks have in common? Those incredible floofy tails. Today we're going to try to capture some of that dramatic fluffiness on paper.Friday: Cats
What makes a cat look cat-like? We'll spend our last day figuring that out together, and making some very cat-ish drawings to cap out the week!
Meet your teacher!
I'm Stephanie, a teaching artist with almost 30 years of experience with kids and adults, including 25 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art! I’ve been teaching small-group classes online since 2020, and also leading webinar-style classes for the past two years - which have been a genuine delight. I feel a little like Mr. Rogers teaching them!
One of the most frequent compliments I get from my students is how much fun my classes are. I laugh a lot - I love my job, and it shows!

Even though I can't see or hear them, it's very interactive - I'm communicating with them directly! I ask questions and they reply via the private Q&A. I also encourage them to tell me about what they're doing or ask for help if they need it.
Since we can't share art with each other in class, families can post learners' work in the private Facebook community!

Nope! It’s completely optional, but it’s a great way to share your art, and engage with other families and me! I’ll also post replay links in that group for easy reference.
